Women empowerment in Pakistan begins at home, where women and girls need support and opportunities to participate in family and community life. Communities facing limited access to education and services are described as “underprivileged.” We believe many are better recognised as underserved: the issue is not lack of potential, but lack of access. Financial dependence, social pressure, single parenthood, and limited support can affect child education, child development, and family wellbeing.
At Kiran Foundation, our trauma-informed Mother and Child Education System works with children and mothers side by side. We recognise that a child learns best when home and school are connected, and when a mother has access to information, emotional support, and opportunities to grow. Supporting women therefore strengthens children, families, and communities.
How NGOs Are Creating Opportunities for Women and Girls
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Pakistan play an important role in opening pathways for women and girls. As an education NGO and nonprofit organisation, Kiran Foundation brings mothers into the education system as active participants, with opportunities to learn, contribute, and take part in change.
Through Nafeesa Forum and other mothers’ programmes, women are encouraged to share experiences, build confidence, take part in learning activities, and become more involved in their children’s education. These programmes help women recognise the value of their voice, presence, and contribution.
The SWAN Mothers Programme provides a supportive space for mothers, including single mothers navigating emotional or financial challenges. Participants listen, share, and learn from one another while receiving support that can strengthen their emotional wellbeing. With greater support, mothers can care for themselves, guide their children, and participate in family and community life.
Salma Ghar Roshni Programme in Lyari offers women a dedicated safe space for literacy and vocational training. Literacy can help women become more involved in their children’s education, while practical skills can support confidence and independence. Through these opportunities, Kiran Foundation, a nonprofit organisation, supports women’s learning and community development.
The Importance of Girls’ Education for National Development
Girls’ education has an impact far beyond the classroom. When girls have consistent access to learning, they are better prepared to understand information, communicate with institutions, make informed choices, and participate confidently in society. The impact becomes stronger when mothers are included in the learning journey and equipped to support their children at home.
One mother joined Kiran Foundation with her child in 2010 through the Kiran Ibtedai Programme. She remained committed to her child’s education, and her child later secured admission on merit in mainstream education. Over time, she began carpooling and supporting other families in the community. Her journey reflects how an empowered and emotionally balanced mother can influence her child, family, and community.
Mothers also deserve recognition for the role they play in a child’s progress. At the end of the academic year, when children receive annual progress reports, mothers who have remained actively involved are appreciated with “Super Mom” sashes. This recognition carries a significant message: a mother’s effort matters, and her growth deserves to be seen.
Today, mothers who first came to Kiran Foundation through their children contribute to the organisation in different roles. They include a Welfare Manager, a DCTO Campus Administrator, a Kati Pahari Flagship Administrator, and a Creative Content Creator. One mother now serves as Principal of the Alamabad Campus in Swabi.
These journeys show community empowerment in practice. Mothers have opportunities to become contributors, team members, professionals, and leaders within the system that once supported their families. The impact of education can extend beyond one child or household and into the wider community.
Maria’s journey reflects this spirit of possibility. She joined Kiran Foundation at the age of nine, beginning a path from Lyari to Japan and onward to the United States. Through Kiran Foundation, Maria grew in confidence and determination. In 2024, she became one of only five finalists selected for the United World Colleges Programme. After completing the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at UWC ISAK Japan, she secured a fully funded scholarship to Lewis & Clark College, USA. As Kiran Foundation’s first International Ambassador, Maria continues to inspire young people to dream beyond boundaries.
Why Investing in Women Creates Stronger Communities
Community development becomes more sustainable when women and girls are included. When they are empowered financially, emotionally, and through skills development, the benefits extend to children, families, and the community. Women are often central to caregiving, children’s learning, and family decisions, so strengthening their confidence and stability can create wider social impact.
At the heart of this vision is Sabina Khatri, Founder and Chairperson of Kiran Foundation. Her work in education and community development has inspired mothers, girls, educators, and young people. Her contribution was nationally recognised with the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, one of Pakistan’s prestigious civilian awards. Her journey reflects the belief that Women Empowerment in Pakistan should have space to learn, lead, serve, and contribute.
Through Kiran Foundation’s education and enrichment programmes, girls take part in sports, creativity, self-expression, and leadership activities. These experiences help them build resilience, teamwork, and communication skills, while encouraging them to recognise their abilities and pursue their ambitions.
When mothers receive support, children benefit. Women’s stability, skills, and opportunities can strengthen family life, while girls who see women leading can imagine leadership for themselves.
Kiran Foundation continues to work towards women empowerment in Pakistan through lasting relationships with mothers, girls, children, and communities. By widening access to education and support, we help create pathways for them to learn, grow, lead, and move forward with dignity.
